Now You Get An Award For Exercising!
When I was thirteen years old I began running track as an eighth grade student. I was not fast at all, but I noticed immediately that I could outrun even the juniors and seniors during the pre-season long runs. I became the only eighth grade one-mile and two-mile runner. I enjoyed it from the start.
Once school ended I enjoyed running so much I joined a summer track club in June. From the first practice I realized that how I performed in spring during my first school season was not going to be good enough to compete well for the club. I was a novice runner. I seemed to labor around the track with a short, clumsy, stomp of a stride compared to the other long-distance athletes around my age. My coaches taught me how to run smoother, quicker and more effectively. After two months of the most intense training I could imagine I became a competitive runner. I advanced all the way to the Junior Olympic National Championships 1500-meter final. I earned sixth place.
I remember going to the awards stand to receive my medal. It was a precious moment. I have never forgotten that feeling of accomplishment and joy. On that day I believe I became a runner for life. Now, it is twenty years later and I am still running track.
I still love the thrill of bringing the best out of myself in a race. I am still moved by the joy of a well-earned award for my efforts. During my years as a track athlete I have collected certificates, ribbons, medals, trophies, plaques and other cool awards.
