Boast Your Healthy Back (Yes, That One)
Now, this is head turning news! Researchers have just released information that will console millions of people around the world - women in particular. For so long, the media and men alike have been singing the praises and lifting the stature of women with healthier derrieres like Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce' and Kim Kardashian. Well, science is now joining the chorus.
The subcutaneous fat found around the hips and buttocks may actually be helpful. Of course, this breaking news is the exact opposite of what science has found regarding the visceral fat associated with greater girth around the abdominal area. It appears that the subcutaneous fat might improve glucose metabolism which means the body better regulates insulin.
Obesity and diabetes are two of the larger consequences when the body does not properly regulate insulin. In the study, researchers injected the subcutaneous fat from the lower regions of mice into the abdominal region of other mice. They wanted to see if fat was fat or if it made a difference where the fat came from. The mice receiving the fat showed improved insulin regulation and glucose levels as well as reduced fat mass and total weight.
So, what does all this mean to you?
First, you can feel good about sporting your pear-shape. While it was already known that the fat around the hips was different than the fat around the middle, it is good to know that the fat might actually be protecting you from type II diabetes.
Second, keep eating well and exercising and exhibiting other healthy behaviors. Obviously this study is not suggesting that if having a little is good, then having a lot is better. So, keep doing what you do to keep your body weight in a healthy range, improve your organ functions, boost your energy and just feel good.
Third, go to your favorite music download site. Buy a certain 1990's track by Sir Mix-A-Lot to upload to your mp3 player. Then, you can enjoy singing along about the merits of a healthy back while you workout.
